Thankfully, it’s not difficult once you know what to do. We’ll explain how to turn off your PS5 easily.
Turning Off Your PS5 vs. Rest Mode
You should know that turning off your PS5 is only one of its power options. The PlayStation 5 can also go into Rest Mode, which is a low-power state like putting your computer to sleep.
In Rest Mode, your PS5 can perform a number of tasks. Depending on your system settings, the PS5 will charge your controllers, download software and game updates, and install games that you purchase from the PlayStation Store on your phone or computer. Your console’s lighting turns orange while in Rest Mode.
When in Rest Mode, your PS5 is still turned on, so you shouldn’t disconnect the power cable without fully turning it off first. When your PS5 is turned off, it doesn’t use any power, so you can unplug it without worry.
How to Turn Your PS5 Off
When you want to completely power down your PlayStation 5, here’s what to do:
Press the PlayStation button on your controller to open the quick menu, which appears at the bottom of the screen. Scroll over to the Power icon, which is at the far right of the menu. Press X with that icon highlighted to open the power menu. Choose Turn Off PS5 to shut the console down. If you’re planning to turn it right back on, perhaps to troubleshoot an issue, you can use Restart PS5 instead.
Turning off your PlayStation 5 will close all running games, so make sure you’ve saved your progress before doing this. As your PS5 shuts down, the lights on the console will blink, then turn off once it’s fully powered off. At that point, you can then safely disconnect the power cable.
If you prefer, you can also turn off the PS5 using the physical button on the front of the console. Locate the Power button, which is a black button near the bottom of the system’s glossy black panel. If you have the standard PS5, the Power button is the one closer to the bottom of the system—below the Eject button for the disc drive. On the Digital Edition of the PS5, the Power button is the only button since there’s no disc drive.
Press and hold this button until you hear two beeps, then your PS5 will shut down. If you press and release the button after one beep, it will put your system into Rest Mode instead. Make sure the lights on top of the console are out before you unplug or move the system (perhaps to change the stand orientation of your PS5).
Turning Off Your PS5 Made Simple
Now you know how to turn off the PS5. It’s not difficult, and with these two methods, you can do it whether your controller is handy or not.
Meanwhile, there are fixes if your PS5 is shutting down randomly on its own.
