We’ll explain how to switch off your Apple TV using a remote or going through the Settings section. You can also use a sleep timer to be able to turn it back on with one button.
How to Turn Off Your Apple TV With the Remote
Turning your device off is essential to understanding how your Apple TV works.
For remotes that are fourth generation or newer, there will be a home button you need to press. The button will either have a picture of a home or TV screen, or it could read Menu.
If your Apple TV is third generation or older, you should press the Play/Pause button instead of the Home button.
Simply press and hold that button for three seconds, then select Sleep on screen. Depending on your setup, your Apple TV and the monitor will both turn off.
If you are not currently watching anything on your Apple TV, leave it alone for a while and it will eventually turn itself off. This is because there is a sleep timer that will turn off the TV depending on a specific time of inactivity.
If you don’t actually have your original remote and have purchased a universal remote, you’ll have to turn off the Apple TV via Settings.
How to Turn Off Your Apple TV via Settings
Without access to a Home button, you can only turn off your Apple TV by accessing the Settings area, where you have an option to put the TV to sleep.
You don’t need to understand how to download apps to the Apple TV to access your Settings because it will already be there by default.
Go to the Home screen Select Settings Select Sleep Now
In the first and second generation Apple TVs, the Sleep Now option is called Standby. As long as you select Standby, your Apple TV will go into sleep mode.
Again, depending on your setup, when you select the Sleep Now option both your Apple TV and monitor will be put to sleep.
How to Customize Your Apple TV Sleep Timer
As mentioned earlier, a period of inactivity on your Apple TV will cause it to automatically turn off. That is, unless there is something playing on the TV like a movie or YouTube video.
You can change how long it takes for your Apple TV to automatically turn off in the Settings area.
Go to Home screen Select Settings Select General Select Sleep After Choose a period of time
You can also choose Never, which will always keep your Apple TV on. You will need to manually shut it off every single time.
Alternatively, you can set the sleep timer for 15 minutes, 30 minutes, one hour, five hours, and ten hours.
How to Turn On Your Apple TV
All you need to do is press the Home button, or the Menu button, to turn your Apple TV back on. It should display your home screen within a couple of seconds.
If you experience trouble getting your device to turn back on, try unplugging it, waiting for five seconds, and then plugging it back in.
Any more problems and you’ll need to contact Apple support directly. Alternatively, take the device to an Apple Store in your area.
